The miniature electric train was invented by Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1900, at the age of 23. Mr. Cowen, an immigrant to this country, and a successful inventor before this, fitted a small motor under a model of a railroad flatcar. He put it on 30 feet of miniature track, and the Lionel train was born. It was originally used as a store display rather than as a toy.

By 1906, when preassembled track was introduced and a 110-volt electric transformer replaced the original wet-cell batteries, the Lionel trains as we know them began to take shape. Before long, Joshua Lionel Cowen began manufacturing cattle cars, passenger cars, train stations and tunnels and more.

By 1910 the Lionel electrain train sets were becoming very popular, remember that not all homes even had electricity at the time, though. Growth became tough for the company during the depression years because few could afford the relatively high price tag, but eventually Lionel trains became the standard. I remember my first Lionel set when I was a boy, as do so many. One of the company slogans was "Lionel - the Father and Son Railroad".
