Introduction to Coca Cola CollectiblesCoca Cola was invented in Atlanta, Georgia in 1886 by Dr. John Pemberton, and first marketed in syrup form as a brain and nerve tonic. It was sold at drugstores, which usually had soda fountains, and one day a customer asked for it to be mixed with soda water. The refreshing taste that was produced was the beginning of history. Coca Cola wasn't an immediate hit, however, averaging only 9 drinks sold per day for the first year, total sales of $50.00. Today, in comparison, an average of 800 million drinks are consumed daily worldwide. In 1888 the business was purchased by Asa Chandler, reportedly for $2300.00. He incorporated the company, registered the now famous trademark, and initiated agressive advertising campaigns and promotions. Coca Cola became a household name by 1896. In 1899, bottling rights were purchased by 2 Tennessee entrepreneurs for a dollar (!), which meant the drink could now be easily found outside the soda fountain. The rest is history.
